Designed in 1971 by Àngel Jové and reissued by Santa & Cole, the Babel lamp is a sculptural piece that challenges the conventions of decorative design. Inspired by the biblical tower of the same name, its cylindrical body, made of solid or cast alabaster, conveys a serene and monumental presence. The hand-carved stone transforms the light into a warm, diffused, and inviting glow that adds character to any space.
At the time of its creation, using alabaster was a bold aesthetic statement. Far from traditional "noble" materials, this semi-translucent rock—then associated with kitsch souvenirs—was reclaimed here as an emotional, living, imperfect, and profoundly contemporary material. Each piece of Babel is unique: the veins, textures, and transparencies of the alabaster give the light an almost organic dimension, changing according to the time of day.
The Babel doesn't seek to impose itself, but rather to generate atmosphere. It works as an ambient table lamp in living rooms, bedrooms, or rest areas, projecting a soft light that invites contemplation and conversation. Its brutalist aesthetic, sober yet vibrant, makes it one of the most distinctive pieces of modern Spanish design.
Selected by MIDIMAL for its balance of form, material, and emotion, the Babel lamp is a statement of intent. A piece with soul, designed to accompany you with a silent presence and timeless beauty.
